So how do you choose your sewing pattern?
So many sewers have all but given up on trying to purchase the right size pattern. After doing some research of my own, I found in Sandra Betzina’s book, Fast Fit, the high bust or chest measuremnt is used to determine size for the four major pattern companies: Butterick, McCalls, Simplicity and Vogue. “This is taken above the bust, by placing the measuring tape high under the arm and higher than the bra band.”
Other pattern companies and independent pattern designers use the full bust adjustment to determine size. They are Stretch and Sew, Quik Sew, Burda, New Look, Style, Neue Mode and Today’s Fit (from Vogue and Simplicity). Use either the high bust or full bust measurement (depending on the pattern maker) when choosing blouse, coat, jacket or dress patterns.
Pants and skirt patterns are chosen by the full hip measurement. This is taken at the fullest part of the hips.
I hope this information will be of help to you when you select your next pattern. Let me know!
