About Us

Sew Much Better’s primary goals are to teach sewing to all who desire to learn the craft of sewing and to assist those who want to improve this skill.

Sew Much Better was first established in Charleston, SC in 1990 where it was a small fabric, notions and alterations store for a couple of years. In 1998 it reopened in Newport News, VA offering sewing instruction and alterations. After being put on the back burner for a while (10 years! Yikes!), I decided to resuscitate my passion. SMB is now a venue where multiple levels of sewing are taught to the novice, fit is an institution, and I still do alterations and clothing construction. All levels of sewists are welcomed.

I am Carolyn Williams, owner and creator of SMB. Inspired by my cousin, I have been sewing many years. My brother gave me my first sewing machine. From that time until now, I have learned many things, and there is still so much more that I want to know.

I’m a member of The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Sewing Guild and winner of the 2014 ASG Annual Celebration Fashion Show¬†“Fifty Shades of Purple”.

I’m also a Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructor. Since my certification, I have been very fortunate to teach fit classes in the Hampton Roads and surrounding areas.

It has been my good fortune to be a member in such prestigious organizations as the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP) and the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW). These organizations have helped shape Sew Much Better into the wonderful business that it is today.

Please visit often to see what is going on and be inspired by the wonderful things that my students are doing.

Thank you so much for visiting!
